Best Buddies Pet Pantry is celebrating its first year anniversary, having
helped more than 400 pet owners in need.
The pantry is an all-volunteer non-profit organization that provides free
pet food to families in need. The pantry’s mission is to help reduce the
number of family pets surrendered to animal shelters due to lack of food and
keep families and pets together.
The pantry distributes monthly in Porter County at Duneland Community
Center, 801 Broadway, Chesterton. In March, it expanded to Lake County to
partner with four township trustees in North, St John, Cedar Lake and
Hanover townships.
To be eligible to receive aid, recipients must be at least 21 years old, a
resident of Porter or Lake County with a valid state ID and proof of
financial need. The pantry provides free pet supplies, cat litter, low-cost
vaccine and spay/neuter information.
The pantry is also a Food Bank Partner with Petco Foundation, with partner
stores in Highland, Merrillville, Calumet City, and Homewood, Ill. Donations
can be dropped off at any store. Pet items needed are any new and not
expired dog and cat food, dog biscuits and treats, cat treats, critter food
(fish, birds, hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits), new or gently used collars
leashes, re-sealable plastic gallon or quart size bags, plastic shopping
bags, and pet food coupons.
All donations are tax-deductible and can be dropped off at any donation box,
located at Chesterton Feed Garden, Centier Bank, First State Bank of
Porter, Westchester Animal Clinic, Ark of the Dunes Animal Hospital,
Southlane Animal Hospital, and Coco’s Canine Cabana.
The pantry’s current fundraiser is Dining To Donate at Applebee’s. Dine at
Applebee’s in Chesterton, Portage, Valparaiso or Michigan City on any
Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday in June and 15 percent of the bill will be
donated to the pantry. Diners will also get a $5 coupon off their next
