At Pet Barn in Fulton, owner Kelly Ballentine takes an organic and holistic approach to feeding and caring for animals. Frustrated with the lack of natural food for her dog, Ballentine decided to open her own company in 1994. Although it was originally located in Montgomery County, Ballentine relocated Pet Barn to Maple Lawn in December.
“I’ve always been into nutrition and health,” she says. “It’s always been a part of my life and a part of my dogs’ lives.”
To say that Ballentine is passionate about her pets would be a gross understatement. Her Newfoundland dogs, Blackjack and Kayak, come to work with her every day.
In addition to carrying a wide variety of natural and raw pet food, Pet Barn has a bakery that produces pet-friendly snacks such as Corgi Cannolis, Collie-e-Clairs, pupcakes and birthday cakes.
“We have all natural items in the store,” says Ballentine. “Chemicals are not our friends.” Ballentine describes the difference between her philosophy and that of many chain stores as “the difference between eating processed foods your whole life and eating raw fruits and vegetables out of your garden.”
Customizable pet bedding from Big Shrimpy and Bowsers Home Designs are available for your furry one to sleep in style, as well as an assortment of collars and toys. But Pet Barn isn’t just for dogs; there are items for cats and other small animals as well.
